Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom is a balls out melodrama that has the courage of its convictions – it’s a messy, exuberant romp. I wish Luhrmann had trusted his dancers more, but he’s dancing with the camera, too – the director keeps cutting in. This works fine for the over-the-top plot though, and if the movie’s tongue sometimes slips out of its cheek and dangles from the corner of its mouth that’s part of the fun. Fine relief from holiday stress, or from too many Tom Hooper films.
