Like Crazy (2012)

Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy got some neat reviews when it came out from critics I respect, but I can’t feel the love. The first twenty minutes are indeed magical – they capture what it feels like to fall in love and to hell with the rest of the world. I made a note about an hour in that there hadn’t been a word of dialogue that moved the plot in any direction; turns out I was right, Doremus simply gave his actors an outline and they improvised their lines. The film’s fatal flaw is that it casts Jennifer Lawrence as The Other Woman. This makes no sense if you want the audience to care if your leads ever get back together – as it is, we don’t give a crap and neither do they. Jennifer deserves better.
